Winter 2025 Youth Programs Open Gyms

As we introduce dodgeball to the community, we’re focusing on welcoming youth to the sport in a fun and accessible way. Committing to a league can feel overwhelming, so we’re starting with a series of no-commitment open gyms.

Young players aged 9 to 17 are invited to join us for sessions where they’ll learn the fundamentals of dodgeball, including throwing, catching, teamwork, sportsmanship, and building a sense of community.

If your child is looking for a fun, active, and safe winter activity, this program could be the perfect fit!

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Question 1: Where is dodgeball held, and at what time?
The Open Gyms will be held at the Southdale YMCA from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, starting on February 16th. You can find the full schedule listed above. You do not need to be an active YMCA member.

Question 2: Do I have to remain with my child at all times?
While it’s not mandatory, we strongly encourage parents to stay and watch their child play dodgeball. Your presence helps us maintain a supportive and positive environment and provides assistance if any disciplinary issues arise.

Question 3: How experienced are the staff at Minnesota Dodgeball in the event of an emergency?
Our staff members are trained in CPR and first aid, ensuring they are prepared to handle emergencies with care and professionalism. Additionally, our team leaders have extensive experience managing youth programs and maintaining a safe, fun environment.

Question 4: How do you prevent headshots or high throws that could hit children in the face?
We take player safety very seriously. Our rules strictly prohibit intentional headshots, and any high throws will result in immediate penalties or removal from play. Coaches and referees actively monitor the games to ensure compliance with these rules. During warmups and training, we emphasize proper throwing techniques to minimize unintentional high throws.

Question 5: What should my child bring to the open gym sessions?
Your child should wear comfortable athletic clothing, non-marking athletic shoes, and bring a water bottle. All necessary equipment, such as dodgeballs, will be provided.

Question 6: Is there a cost to participate, and how do I sign up?
The cost is $10 per participant per session, payable upon RSVP via the registration above or at the door. We ask that parents RSVP so we can plan out the program ahead of time but walk-ins are always welcome.

Question 7: Can my child bring a friend?
Absolutely! We encourage participants to invite friends. Dodgeball is a fantastic way to make new connections and have fun together.

Question 8: Are there specific rules for the games?
Yes, our games follow a structured set of rules to ensure fair play, safety, and fun for everyone. Our coaches will go over the rules at the start of each session and ensure they are followed throughout.

Question 9: I have additional questions, what is the point of contact?
Feel free to reach out to us at twincities.youthprograms@minnesotadodgeball.com with any questions. We’re happy to help!
